March List Sandwiches and April Wrapup

Hello again sandwich fans, seems like it’s been hardly any time at all since the last time we did a monthly roundup post. February’s a short month even in a leap year and March is upon us now, along with 3 new sandwiches to discover. First though, we need to take a look back at what we learned over the past 29 days.

In February the Tribunal went out of alphabetical order a bit, starting with the street food of Brittany, a French pig-in-a-blanket called Galette-saucisse. Turns out a buckwheat crepe is every bit as good as a hot dog bun as a vehicle for good sausages, if not better! Next we tried a sort of deconstructed cheese sandwich served in the German cities of Cologne and Dusseldorf, Halve Hahn, consisting of a half roll of rye bread and a thick slice of Gouda cheese served with, at minimum, onion and mustard. Tastes great with a good German beer! Finally, we did what we could, but we still don’t know what if anything separates the South Australian Fritz and Sauce sandwich from plain old bologna and ketchup on buttered white bread. Maybe one of you Australians can enlighten us? But we’re moving on.

So let’s take a look at what March has in store for the Tribunal!

First up for the Tribunal in March is the Egyptian meat-stuffed flatbread called Hawawshi. We’ve been excited to try this since reading an article a few years ago about a chef in Los Angeles selling them out of his garage–we haven’t been able to get there and try his (YET) but we’re gonna see if we can recreate hawawshis on our own. We’re also going to check out the Fall River hot dog stand specialty called Hot Cheese, a glob of cheddar curds served in a hamburger bun. The word “glob” may not be very appetizing but we’re all about that cheddar. Finally, we’re going to tackle Nashville’s Hot Chicken sandwiches, a natural evolution of Nashville Hot Chicken that’s been spreading across the country for a few years now. The endorphins will flow this month!

Definitely some delicious things that we’ve been looking forward to exploring for a very long time, so March is shaping up to be an exciting month for the Tribunal! Stick around and see what we come up with!

Changes to the List

Wikipedia List

  • Patso was removed from the Wikipedia List of Sandwiches. It was added back in November and appears to be a Turkish version of a chip butty, and didn’t appear from our brief research on it to add anything unique to the genre. We look forward to being proven wrong if there is something interesting to investigate–let us know!
  • The separate entry for the Italian Pepper and Egg Sandwich was removed. This appears to be a more East Coast-centric take on a sandwich that is also popular in Chicago during Lent, but using long hots instead of bell peppers. We had it on our List for a while, then removed it because we couldn’t really find a consensus on its notability. If you have any interesting intel on the sandwich though please reach out!
  • A German sandwich called Matschbrötchen was added, described as a crusty German bread roll stuffed with a marshmallow and chocolate treat that is usually called Schokokuss or “chocolate kiss.” Speaking for myself–Jim–rather than the Tribunal: I may be contractually obligated by marriage to make this sandwich, as my wife Mindy’s two favorite food memories from the time she spent in Germany as a child are Schokokuss and Brötchen. We’ll see.
  • Gilgeori toast was added, which we wrote about back in 2021. Nice to be ahead of the curve on this one.
  • Lampredotto was added, which we also wrote about in 2021. We are on fire this month!
  • The Brazilian Xis burger was added. We didn’t write about that one in 2021–we wrote about it in 2022 instead.

Our List

We haven’t updated our list in a few months, in large part because it now seems inevitable that there will be a Sandwich Tribunal Phase 4 and we want to save some sandwiches for then. However, we have a list of pending sandwiches and are always interested in hearing about any local bready delicacies you have that we might not know about already, so let us know if there’s anything we should be adding!

Sandwich Tribunal

The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.

Please pardon my ignorance – what does Phase 4 mean, and what were the first three phases? Thanks!

    • Jim Behymer says:

Hi Bill. Each phase of the project is reflected in the “The List” menu you see above, and represents us working our way through an alphabetical list of sandwiches and writing about each. Phase 1 was our initial run through the Wikipedia List of Sandwiches. Phase 2 was sandwiches that were added to the Wikipedia List of Sandwiches after we’d already worked past them alphabetically, along with a few other sandwiches we learned about independently. Phase 3, ongoing, has largely been sandwiches we discovered independently and added to our own list. Phase 4, assuming we’re still doing this after our current run through the alphabet, will be whatever sandwiches we missed the first 3 times–possibly along with any sandwiches we feel need to be revisited since we first wrote about them.
