October List Sandwiches and September Wrapup

September has been a busy month. Not for the Tribunal, necessarily, but for Jim personally, who started the month with the annual Labor Day Hog Roast, attended a wedding in Oregon, did some freelance writing, turned 53, and still managed to knock out 3 new sandwiches from the List (just) before the month ended! It’s October now, and three new sandwiches are on the horizon for the Tribunal, but first let’s take a look at what we’ve been doing in September.

We started September with a look at the collards sandwich of Robeson County, North Carolina, a Lumbee Indian specialty that is at the same time a distillation of several soul food traditions. It’s a delicious sandwich with a fascinating background that you should read about if you haven’t! Next we tried our hand at the oversized, overstuffed hot dog variant beloved in Chile, the Completo. Next time someone tells you that Americans use too much mayo you can just point them at Chile and watch their brain melt. Finally, we finished the month on a high note with the Continental Roll of Western Australia. Beloved in Perth and unknown in the rest of the country, it’s a testament to the extreme isolation of that city. Plus it’s just a tasty Italian sub!

Now let’s take a look at what’s ahead for the Tribunal in October!

We have mentioned Coronation Chicken on the Tribunal before, most notably when writing about the British Rail Sandwiches of yesterdecade, but recently we decided it should get its own writeup. Possibly because I just wanted to make it again. Should be delicious in either case. We’ll also be attempting to replicate the Cutter sandwich of Barbados, as a trip to Barbados is not in the (non-existent) Sandwich Tribunal budget. Doesn’t look too hard to make, though the authentic ambience may be difficult to capture. Similarly, the Dakos of Crete, often called a salad rather than a sandwich, though that is one big crouton sitting underneath it–we can’t get to Crete to try one, so we’ll just have to bring a tiny piece of Crete to us.

As always, we have some tasty days ahead of us, and we hope you’ll come back and read about them!

Changes to the List

Wikipedia List

There were 2 edits to this page in the entirety of September. One was to capitalize the letter I in the word Italian. The other was to add a Brazilian sandwich that may or may not be a variant of the Xis that we wrote about a while back called X-caboquinho. We’ll investigate and determine whether it should get its own writeup here.

Our List

We added 2 potential sandwiches this month

  • Fritz and Sauce from Australia. This is basically bologna and ketchup on white bread but I’m hoping that there’s an interesting story behind it that we can learn. If not, I guess I can’t complain too hard about bologna and ketchup. (This is false, I can certainly complain a lot about bologna and ketchup)
  • Pav Bhaji from Mumbai, India. It is my favorite vegetarian Indian snack and while it might not quite constitute a sandwich, it’s sandwich-adjacent and frankly I just want an excuse to write about it.

I like sandwiches. I like a lot of other things too but sandwiches are pretty great
