July List Sandwiches and June Wrapup

We had some good times, didn’t we June? OK, OK, I’ll admit. Your sandwiches were… not my favorite. It was interesting to learn how to make homemade phyllo pastry for stuffing into the Macedonian Simit-Pogača we made, and sure, I enjoyed making the Turkish version of Simit-Poğaça as well. That Swedish sandwich, Skagen Macka, sure it was quite good, a dill-inflected shrimp salad served on toasted sourdough. Who wouldn’t like that? But Slugburgers? Sure they were better than the name let on but… June, June, June.

A lot of terrible shit went down in June 2022 and the sooner it’s in the rearview the better.

So let’s take a look at the sandwiches we’ll be covering in July!

Taiwan’s street food “Small sausage in large sausage” (or 大腸包小腸) is a sandwich I’ve been both anticipating and dreading since I first read about it. Will I be traveling to Taiwan to try it? Sadly, no. Will I get it even remotely right making it at home? We’ll find out! Next on the agenda is Sosis Bandari, the name of both a spicy Persian sausage-and-potato dish and the sandwiches made from that dish. I have a Persian friend who has hinted at writing about Persian sandwiches for the site for some time but has never quite had the time to follow through, but I’m desperate to know more about them! Maybe I can talk her into helping me write about them instead? Finally, a brand new sandwich was just added to our List 2 weeks ago, jumping into a slot for July by dint of a little alphabetical happenstance. It’s a spicy loosemeat sandwich served in taverns in a specific area of Northeastern Minnesota and I can’t wait to try it!

July has some pretty exciting sandwiches in store for the Tribunal, so good riddance, June!

Changes to the List

Wikipedia List

  • On June 15th, the Bulgarian “Princess” sandwich was added to the Wikipedia List of Sandwiches. Coincidentally, we had discovered it around the same time and added it to our List as well.

Our List

Well, Jim went looking for some sandwiches to add this month, and he found them. Here’s what we’ve added!

  • Broodje Hete Kip, a Dutch sandwich consisting of spicy Indonesian-influenced sweet-and-sour chicken stuffed in a bread roll
  • Mlawi, a Tunisian flatbread that is often stuffed to make a type of sandwich or wrap
  • Xis, a pressed burger from the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul (this intel passed on to me by my pal Matt)
  • Keema Pav, a spicy lamb stew served in soft pav rolls served as a street food in Mumbai
  • The Bulgarian Princess sandwich, a simple toast topped with minced meat and cheese, was added to our List on June 13th after somebody mentioned it on TikTok
  • Jim stumbled across an article on the South American sandwich from Minnesota that we are covering this very month, adding it to our List on June 14th

Sandwich Tribunal

The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
