June List Sandwiches and May Wrapup

May was a busy month for Jim, who is not only doing triple duty as all three members of the titular Tribunal these days, but also triple duties as a sandwich writer here, a freelance sandwich writer for other sites (one piece on The Takeout was published last week, and another is due to be published elsewhere soon), and a sandwich videomaker on Tiktok. It’s like they say, we don’t choose the sandwich life, sandwich life chooses us.

Still, we found time to write about Bolivia’s Cholas and the sandwich that takes their name, a roasted pork sandwich featuring a pickled vegetable mix similar to a mild giardiniera that would likely go over well in Chicago. We also explored the Savoury course from England’s Victorian and Edwardian eras, and the savory Scotch Woodcock that was often served as part of it. Finally, we closed May with a brief discussion of northern France’s Sandwich Américain, a variant of Belgium’s Mitraillette that hews more specifically toward American burgerdom.

Now let’s take a look at June’s sandwiches!

In June we’ll try a sandwich served exclusively in Macedonia’s capital city Skopje, which shares a name with a kind of cheese-stuffed roll in Turkey, Simit-poğaça. Gosh I hope we don’t get confused and make the wrong one! We’ll also be checking out Skagen Macka, a dish of toast topped with shrimp that’s popular in Sweden. Finally, we will be eating Mississippi’s Slugburgers, a kind of hamburger adulterated with fillers of soy or grains that is more appetizing than the name suggests, one hopes.

Believe it or not, I’m actually looking forward to trying each of these. I hope you are looking forward to reading about them!

Changes to the List

Wikipedia List

  • Pit beef was added, and it’s about damn time.
  • Some joker took Dynamite off the list, saying “Sloppy Joe is already represented.” I know the people of Woonsocket aren’t going to take this well, yet the edit has already stood for a week

Our List

  • The Hot Salami sandwich of St. Louis has been added–I suppose we need an excuse to get back there and this one is as good as any!
  • Utah’s Pastrami Burger is now on our List, and that’s an overdue addition, as I’ve been wanting to try one forever
  • A recent article on the best sandwich in each state brought the Pheasant Sandwich of South Dakota to our attention, and we’ll give it a shot as well.
  • Massachusetts apparently has its own type of roast beef sandwich we need to try called a North Shore 3-Way. At least, I sure hope it’s a sandwich.
  • We discovered that Denmark’s crisp pork roast Flæskesteg is often made into a sandwich and frankly that sounds terrific, we’re in!
  • We’ve mentioned it once or twice and though it’s never gotten a dedicated writeup, I suppose the UK’s Coronation Chicken deserves one.
  • People keep telling me about more and more obscure UK sandwiches and some of these, we’ve got to try. Case in point, Saveloy Dip.

Sandwich Tribunal

The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
