November List Sandwiches and October Wrapup

Greetings, sandwich fans, and welcome to November at the Tribunal! As always, we have three new sandwiches we’ll be researching, eating, and writing about over the next month. And as always, we’ll start by looking back over what we covered in October.

October’s sandwiches led off with one that has graced these pages previously, the Coronation Chicken sandwich of England, with a bonus paragraph or two about the Coronation Quiche that Charles III introduced last year. We’re big fans of that curried chicken salad, but the vegetarian quiche was surprisingly tasty as well! Next we tried our hand at the sandwiches of Barbados, most notably the Cutter and a type of fish cake Cutter that is usually called a Bread-and-Two instead. Jim thought his versions were pretty good but is willing to be flown to the islands and proven wrong–hit up that Contact Us page. Finally, the Tribunal took on a Greek salad that is bread-focused enough to at least be sandwich-adjacent, the Dakos of Crete.

Additionally, some fans of the site may know that Jim has been posting some videos on various sites–TikTok and YouTube for the most part. Early in October, a video Jim did about the mortadella sandwich from Anthony Bourdain’s cookbook Appetites blew up on TikTok, and in an effort to try to promote the video essays more broadly, we have begun posting them to the Sandwich Tribunal Facebook and Instagram pages as well. And incidentally, Jim and Mindy took a trip to Philadelphia so there’s been a recent video about cheesesteaks that’s pretty good as well.

Now let’s take a look at what’s coming in November!

On one previous occasion when we mentioned Eggs Benedict, at least one Tribunal commenter explicitly said that could not be considered a sandwich. Yet it appears to be as much as sandwich as any other open-faced item we’ve covered. Come with us, eschew pedantry, embrace brunch! Speaking of brunch, the Cuban Elena Ruz sandwich seems like a perfect fit for it. We’ve been looking forward to trying this for quite some time now. Finally, the Empalme of Mexico’s Nuevo Leon state seems like little more than a bean quesadilla but who knows, perhaps it will hold some surprises for us. And if not, then we’ll have eaten some tasty quesadillas!

As always, we hope you’ll come along and learn about these sandwiches–and sandwich-adjacent treats–with us!

Changes to the List

Wikipedia List

  • Portuguese Bifana was added to the Wikipedia List of Sandwiches on October 2nd. We have covered Bifana previously but it’s great to see it added to the Wikipedia List!
  • A sandwich of Turkish origin called Patso was apparently added in February of 2022 but we missed it? Or perhaps we noted the addition at the time but just chose not to add it? It seems to simply be a type of chip butty. We will evaluate and decide whether to add it to our List
  • British Rail Sandwich was removed from the Wikipedia List. That is kind of mind-blowing–it’s been there since we started this project 9+ years ago. But to be honest, it never really belonged there, as we noted when we wrote about it in 2015, just a few months into this project. So long British Rail Sandwich, we hardly knew ye.
  • A link to a type of chicken finger pita wrap native to Detroit called Hani was added, but not sorted properly. There is an associated Wikipedia article for teh sandwich itself, along with supporting links, most of which appear to have been published within the past several weeks. It looks like a marketing push for a new restaurant in a Detroit suburb but we’ll keep an eye on it.
  • A Polish “sandwich” called Słońce na Kromce was added. This apparently means “Sun in a slice” and refers to a dish that in the 2005 V For Vendetta movie was called “Eggy in a Basket” and that I grew up calling a Hobo Egg. We will contemplate adding this to our List
  • Another Polish sandwich called Kanapka z sałatką z makreli–or sandwich with mackerel and salad–was added around the same time. We covered Kanapki in general but it might be interesting to do a more specific version.

Our List

We haven’t added any sandwiches in October. But based on those changes to the Wikipedia List, we have a few things to add in the near future!

I like sandwiches. I like a lot of other things too but sandwiches are pretty great

Hi! I’m a fan of the sandwich tribunal from Germany and I’ve been meaning to suggest the Matschbrötchen for a long time, and only now have I come around to do so. It’s a Schokokuss – a chocolate coated marshmallow-like treat on a wafer, similar to a Tunnocks tea cake – smashed between two halves of a crusty German roll. I’d love to hear what you think of it!
