A Nauseous Super Naus

It’s Christmas eve, and I probably could/should have spent a little more time thinking about this but I wanted to get it out before the Big Day. I was listening to Christmas music in the car recently and for possibly the first time ever was struck by the phrase “three-decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce.” I decided it might be fun to make, and give Sandwich Tribunal readers a little Christmas bonus this year. Besides, Covid and work have combined to make it impossible for me to spend the holidays with my family like usual. I needed something to do.

So I made this video about a three-decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich (with arsenic sauce).

Now I’m not the first one to have this idea, as I discovered after I started planning this caper. They did it on the funny NPR “Sandwich Monday” feature back in 2013. More recently–just a few weeks ago in fact–a recipe blogger with a site called “Spiced,” who had very similar thoughts to my own regarding this sandwich, published a piece with some beautiful photos and a really nice writeup of his thought process. It is definitely worth a look so please check it out. His sandwiches are definitely far prettier than mine.

So if this guy did it already, why am I doing it now? Because it’s my turn. Besides, I needed something to with this giant horseradish root I’ve got sitting around left over from the Double Down post.

In the video, I neglected to mention that the Grinch has recently been serving my community as a pizza delivery driver. I think that this is the perfect way for him to spread a little joy this holiday season, and besides, who better to bring you your pizza than a man with garlic in his soul?

Happy Holidays, whichever holidays you celebrate, and I hope you all have some delicious things in store for you. There is a very tiny little snippet of “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” in the video, so hopefully it doesn’t get taken down as soon as I publish it.

I like sandwiches. I like a lot of other things too but sandwiches are pretty great
