Your Best Sandwich of 2014?

I gave it some thought, and even though I had some really excellent sandwiches in the last 4 months or so of 2014 while writing posts for this site, I think the best one I had was the spicy fried catfish sandwich at Bolton’s in Nashville, TN.

I’d been to Bolton’s once before, when helping my sister move to Nashville a few years ago, but that time I’d only tried the hot spicy fried chicken (and used a 6-pack of Yuengling to wash it down–it was pretty fiery!) This time, with my whole family there visiting over the kids’ spring break, I knew that Bolton’s would be too spicy for a a full family meal, but I managed to get away with only my (highly spice-tolerant chilihead of a 17 year old (then 16) son while my sister and the rest of the family ate Mexican for a Saturday afternoon lunch.

Bolton’s Spicy Chicken & Fish

The teenager and I ordered some chicken (dark meat, hot) and a catfish sandwich (also hot) to share. The chicken was as tear-inducingly nose-runningly spicy as the previous time. The catfish, though, the catfish wasn’t that incredibly spicy, but was perfectly fried, a delicate, crisp, nicely-seasoned but not overbearing outer layer giving in to perfectly moist, fresh fish flesh beneath. Two fillets were nestled between slices of squishy white bread, simply dressed with mustard, onion, and pickle. I couldn’t believe something so simple could be so good. I let the boy have a few bites, but he seemed happier to attack the chicken, and I ate most of the sandwich by myself.

Best picture I got of it, sorry!

I wish I’d gotten a better photo, but that just means I’ll have to go back and try again!

I guess people do year-end lists in December rather than January, but I thought this might be a fun post to do while our January List posts are still stewing. Thanks for reading, but I’d love for you to take part in the site! Please tell us about the best sandwich you ate in 2014 in the comments below!
