January List Sandwiches and December Wrapup

Happy New Year! Happy New Decade! Happy New Sandwiches! It’s January 2020 and as usual, the new month brings three new sandwiches for us to explore at the Tribunal. First, though, let’s take a look back at the final month of 2019. In December we learned about Guadalajara’s Torta Ahogada, or Drowned Sandwich, an absolute mess of a pork carnitas-stuffed roll served in a dish of spicy tomato and chili arbol sauce. We also learned about the Italian-style tea sandwiches called Tramezzini and their unexpected link to the birth of fascism. Finally, we tackled the Bolivian monster of a carb-on-carb-on-carb sandwich called Trancapecho, in which the local Cochabama specialty dish called Silpancho gets stuffed into a bread roll. It was an especially interesting month, but there’s more good stuff to come!

In January we’ll be looking into the Puerto Rican Tripleta, so called due to its combination of three meats. We’ll also see if there are any interesting Tuna sandwiches out there for us to try. Finally, we’re really looking forward to digging into Vada pav, an Indian bread roll stuffed with a spicy potato fritter. I actually just ate one the other day and it may be the rare carb-on-carb sandwich that I’m 100% in favor of.

Some good things going on in January. Anybody have any special insight into any of these sandwiches? Let us know!

Changes to the List

Almost no edits to that Wikipedia page for the entire month of December. Unbelievable!

However, I’ve added some previously unlisted sandwiches to our schedule here. Within a few months we’ll have reached the end of the Wikipedia list, and while there are a number of sandwiches that were added since we started this project that we’ll be working back through, there are also an absolute ton of sandwiches that have never been seen on the Wikipedia list. I’ve never edited the Wikipedia page that inspires this site myself–something about the idea seemed wrong to me for a while, like this site could only react to the List but not influence it.

At this point though, I don’t want to limit our list to things approved by Wikipedia’s List of Sandwiches. I may add some of these sandwiches to it at some point, but there are other things on our list that might not meet their standards as “sandwiches.” Here is our schedule, now projected to run through June of 2021: The List. Please contact us by commenting on this or any other post on the site, or by using the Contact Us form, if you know of a type of sandwich that is not covered on our List. We hunger for knowledge. Sandwich knowledge.

Sandwich Tribunal

The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
