March List Sandwiches and February Wrapup

Good morning everybody, and welcome to March! February was a short month with many distractions for me, not the least of which was some oral surgery that knocked me out of the sandwich game for about a quarter of that time. So my last couple of posts have felt pretty rushed, at least to me, but I hope you enjoyed them anyway! Regardless, here we are in March with 3 exciting and interesting new sandwiches to cover, but as always first let’s take a look back at how the month of February treated us at the Tribunal.

In February, we spent much of the month trying to get a handle on arepas, a thick and unleavened South American corn flatbread or pancake that is often split open and filled with tasty things to make something very sandwich-like. While I tried multiple methods of making them and ended up with something edible, I think it’s the kind of thing that may take a long time to perfect. I’m happy to leave them to the pros going forward. We also looked at bagel dogs, and invented quite possibly the most perfect bagel dog condiment, dried Chicago-style everything hot dog seasoning. I’m still waiting to hear from Vienna Beef on that one. Finally, we tried our hand at the Honduran Baleada, a fresh, thick, handmade tortilla filled with beans that may make you rethink flour tortillas, if like me you’ve always preferred the corn variety.

Now let’s take a look at what March has in store for the Tribunal!

In March we will be trying the Benedictine spread popularly used for sandwiches in Kentucky. It seems mainly like a whipped version of the typical cucumber sandwich ingredients so it ought to be pretty good. Next we’ll be staying close to home and showing you how good a Chicago-style Big Baby can be. It’s just a double cheeseburger, but not just any double cheeseburger. Finally, we’ll see how close we can get to an authentic Bolo do Caco, a type of Portuguese flatbread that, I’ll be honest, is shaped suspiciously similar to the arepas we just covered. It’s made with wheat flour though and should be completely different in texture, and might even give us a chance to revisit the Prego, so I’m looking forward to that.

These all sound really good if I’m being honest. March should be another tasty month!

Changes to the List

Wikipedia List

  • On February 16th, Argentine Bondiola was added to the Wikipedia List of Sandwiches. Surprise! It’s already on our list and we’re covering it in April! In a halfass way probably but I bet it’ll be good regardless.
  • On February 24th, Tunisian Fricassee was added to the List. This one is also already on ours

  • No changes made to our List in February
