December List Sandwiches and November Wrapup

Hi everybody! Welcome to the final month of 2018 here at the Tribunal. We’ve got some good and weird stuff coming up this month but first let’s talk about the month we just had, November.

The big news for November is that Tribunal contributor Drew returned, coming in just under the wire with a story about her hometown sandwich, the Sailor! We couldn’t be more thrilled to have our friend come back and write about anything–to have her share first-hand knowledge of the birthplace of the sandwich and its history was a fantastic bonus! I also wrote about the Sailor, as well as the Israeli Sabich and the Argentine Sandwich de Milanesa. November was a good month for sandwiches, and for the Tribunal!

And now, December awaits!

This month we’ll be covering the Sandwich Loaf, a bizarre 1950s-recipe-book-nightmare of a bread loaf, stuffed with unidentifiable spreads and lathered in savory cream cheese spread, resulting in a cakelike appearance. Be afraid. We’ll also be covering another Argentine sandwich, the sandwich de miga, a type of multitiered tea sandwich served at parties and other social events in Argentina. Finally, we’ll be trying the London style Salt Beef Bagel, thick-sliced corned beef served in a bagel with pickles and mustard.

Is there anybody in London who’d like to tell us about the salt beef bagel? Is there anybody in Argentina who’d like to tell us about sandwiches de miga? Is there anybody out there who is trapped in a 1955 edition of the Good Housekeeping cookbook who’d like to tell us about the Sandwich Loaf? (I’ve got the 1949 edition and it’s not in there.) Anybody out there have any kind of connection with any of these sandwiches and want to tell the world about it? Get in touch!

Changes to the List

  • Peameal bacon sandwich was added to the list. Peameal bacon is a type of Canadian back bacon, and sandwiches made from it are popular in Toronto. Since we are already past the Ps, this will go on our list of make-up sandwiches to be visited after we complete our first pass through the List.
  • Taco was added and removed, then added again and removed again. Taco remains in our List and will be explored in 2019.

Sandwich Tribunal

The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.

Grew up in late 50’s early 60’s Minnesota. Sandwich cakes were a big thing in our family, especially for baby showers. My Auntie Grace made the most delicious sandwich cakes. Probably the Scandinavian influence. Google smorgastarta and you will see some pretty great cakes. If you’d like I could email you some more smorgastarta reminiscences.

      Hi Lynn,

That would be great! We actually have Smorgastarta as a separate sandwich coming up in a few months but this is the Americanized version just like you grew up with and I’d love to hear about your experiences with it. I’ll send you an email.
