May List Sandwiches and April Wrapup

Hello sandwich friends! We got through April, a month in which we ate fried brains! If we can do that, we can do anything, right? We also covered the Francesinha Poveira, a variant of the Portuguese Francesinha, and the French Dip, an all-American roast beef sandwich dripping with beef juices. And April also featured the triumphant return of Drew to the Tribunal, accompanied by much rejoicing! Thanks, Drew!

And now it is May, and here’s what’s up next.

A Fruit sandwich is the kind of a sandwich, where you have two slices of bread and, um, some fruit I guess? Ftira looks pretty interesting, a specialty Maltese bread stuffed with tuna & fixings. And the Gatsby is the South African answer to the Primanti Bros style sandwich but with some pretty interesting ingredients.

So what do you think, guys? Anybody up to try a sandwich this month?

Edit: I looked through the edit history of the Wikipedia article and we’ve got some movement! Hot dog of course has been added and removed again, or removed and added–currently it’s on the list, which is great! We have another 3 sandwiches that are new and will have to be inserted in the schedule:

  • Pastrami on Rye
  • Roast Beef
  • Sándwich de milanesa

As things stand, these would end up slotting into November 2017, April 2018, and May 2018 respectively, and I am confident that they’ll stand the test of time. I’ll edit them in when I have a moment.

Sandwich Tribunal

The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.

Some background reading for the Gatsby. It’s a very emotional subject here in Cape Town.

Didn’t call it a fruit sandwich, but grew up eating banana and mayonnaise sandwiches. Just white bread, banana sliced into discs, and Duke’s mayonnaise. I loved it at the time, but now just thinking about it I find it a little repulsive.

Hi Jeff! Wasn’t there a big foofooraw about Dale Earnhardt Jr. and that sandwich recently? I guess I’m gonna have to try to source some Duke’s mayonnaise.

I don’t know! Not really up to date on NC and nascar news since I haven’t lived there in 12 years. But seems feasible that there would be a DEJ/banana sandwich controversy. Scandalous.

As always, I suck at writing about sandwiches, and even suck at eating them at the moment. I did get a fluffernutter for Mother’s Day though. On a bagel. And you know what? I would eat it again. If I had time, I’d make marshmallow fluff from scratch. That would be fun.

Jim, not sure if you have seen this but might be of help!
